Jamie Overton has been ruled out of England’s Test series against South Africa and the Hundred after suffering hand and foot injuries while in action for Surrey.

Overton sustained the injuries during his side’s six-wicket County Championship victory over Warwickshire last week and is expected to be out for six weeks.

The 28-year-old will not be named in England’s squad for the three-Test series against South Africa, which is due to be announced on Tuesday.

He will also miss the entirety of the Hundred, with Essex all-rounder Paul Walter selected as his replacement at Manchester Originals, but is hopeful of returning for the conclusion of the County Championship season, with Surrey chasing the title.

Overton made his Test debut in the third Test against New Zealand earlier this summer and, batting at No8, fell just three runs short of a century as he shared a vital 241-run partnership with Jonny Bairstow to rescue Ben Stokes’ side after a top-order collapse.

Overton also took two wickets in the match as England secured a 3-0 series whitewash over the world Test champions, but was then dropped for the rearranged fifth Test against India as Jimmy Anderson returned from a minor niggle.
