James Tavernier in major Rangers honour chance as door opens to Ibrox testimonial if new deal signed

James Tavernier is set to sign a new contract at Rangers that will see him become eligible for a testimonial.

The right-back is already a legend in the eyes of many at Ibrox after becoming their captain and an inspirational figure since Mark Warburton brought him in from Wigan seven years ago. He has two years remaining on his current deal and will pen a two-year extension to take him into the latter stages of his career.

Three years from now is when Tavernier will meet the requirements for a testimonial match for his service and this deal will ensure he gets the chance to fulfil that. It's the next part of the summer business that has included Rangers contract extensions for senior figures like Connor Goldson, Allan McGregor, Steven Davies and Scott Arfield. There's also been John Souttar, Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies and Malik Tillman's arrival.

Rangers have also made serious cash in terms of players exits with the sales of Nigerian international duo Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey.

Tavernier has put up outstanding numbers for a right-back in terms of goal contributions, scoring 83 times with 107 assists in 347 appearances.
