James Tavernier explains two key issues in Rangers' first half problem

Captain James Tavernier understands the criticism coming Rangers' way after yet more dropped points on Sunday.

The Light Blues, who sensationally lost to St Mirren three days earlier, went into interval two goals down against Motherwell, giving them an almighty task to snatch a 2-2 draw in the end.

Rangers are now 14 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership race after their unbeaten Glasgow rivals thrashed St Johnstone.

Reflecting on the latest setback, Tavernier told Rangers TV: "I'm obviously disappointed to drop the points that we did. It's two games in a row now where the first 45 minutes we have conceded poor goals and we are chasing the game.

"We have to start the games better. Obviously we made an impact second half with the substitutes that came on but we couldn't see it over the line.

"It's just poor goals that we are giving away. It's simple as that. It's difficult because we create chances as well, maybe a couple in the first half we should've been more clinical. But, yeah, the goals we are conceding are poor and it's an uphill battle after that.

"We responded really well in the second half but going in at half-time at 2-0 down you know you've got to keep pushing and pushing, we just couldn't get that third goal."

Asked how frustrating it is to be in these precarious positions twice in a week, Tavernier replied: "We never want to drop points and to come in at half-time chasing the game, we don't want to do that.

"We want to start the game well and get that first goal, but we are conceding these types of goals.

"We have to learn from it. The games before these past two, defensively we were much better as a team, so we've got to get back to that and defend better as a team. We need to stop giving away too many chances, easy chances, and be clinical on the opposite end of the pitch."
