Jaguars Expected to Release or Trade CB Shaquill Griffin, per Report

The free agent market could add another former Pro Bowler to the ranks in the near future with the Jaguars reportedly looking to move on from cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

Jacksonville is expected to release or attempt to trade Griffin, 27, in the coming days, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Thursday. A free-agent signing in the summer of 2021, Griffin is coming off a 2022 campaign that ended after he sustained a back injury in Week 6.

Should the Jaguars ultimately fail to find a trade partner, releasing Griffin, who has reportedly been medically cleared, would save the team $13.1 million in cap space. The former Seahawks standout is set to earn an $11.5 million salary, and account for a $17.1 million cap hit in 2023 as part of a three-year, $44.5 million contract he inked in March 2021.

In his five starts during the ’22 season, Griffin totaled four pass-breakups and 29 tackles, a disappointing follow-up to a subpar ’21 campaign that saw him log seven PBUs and 49 tackles in 14 games. Prior to joining the Jags, Griffin made a name for himself as third-round pick in Seattle, where he played the last three of his four seasons alongside twin brother and linebacker Shaquem.

For his career, Griffin, a ’19 Pro Bowl alternate, has logged 59 pass deflections, six interceptions and 327 tackles.
