Jadavpur University engineering teachers ask council to defer offline classes by a week

KOLKATA: A day after the dean of engineering in Jadavpur University resigned, teachers have written to the chairman of the Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology stating that a section of students based in the districts and other states have informed teachers about difficulties in attending offline classes, and have requested they be pushed back by a week.

A section of students of the engineering faculty had alleged some teachers were insisting on taking online classes despite the government allowing in-person lessons.

“The students have requested us to defer offline classes in some departments till February 15 because they are facing difficulties in reaching the city. We understand that many students stay far away from Kolkata and might face problems in rushing back. This is why the decision was taken in the teachers-students committee,” said Partha Pratim Roy, secretary of Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association.

Another dean in the university was reportedly offered to take over as the dean of engineering, but declined. Talks are on to give the responsibility to another senior official of the university who is also on a crucial assignment with the education department.
