ITV inquiry into Phillip Schofield’s This Morning exit over affair 'to last three months'

An inquiry into Phillip Schofield's abrupt This Morning exit over an affair with a young runner is set to last three months, according to reports.

Father-of-two Phil, 61, quit the 'show he loved' in May before admitting to having an "unwise but not illegal" relationship on the ITV daytime show.

The Broom Cupboard star and the runner, who is now in his twenties, are now set to be quizzed by Jane Mulcahy KC, who is is leading the independent inquiry for ITV.

Revealing more details about the investigation, a source said: “The inquiry will speak to all those involved. It will focus on what happened before and after he was first given work experience on the set of This Morning. And it will also seek to establish who knew what and when.

“As well as speaking to current staff it will also invite former employees to come forward with information,' reports the Sun on Sunday.

When contacted by the Mirror an ITV spokesperson said: "Jane Mulcahy KC will review our records and talk to people involved.

"She will take as much time as is necessary to conduct this review and ITV will assist her in any way she requests to facilitate the review."

Also said to be expected to answer questions during the review are Phil's former pal Holly Willoughby, Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary.

ITV chief Dame Carolyn McCall ordered the investigation after Phillip admitted lying to ITV, his family and his agency about his affair.

During an interview with the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Ms McCall said the presenter had been quizzed over widespread rumours, but admitted she had not launched a formal investigation.

Former This Morning host Eamonn Holmes weighed in the drama, telling his GB News viewers: “When they investigated and they asked Schofield did you have an affair with this guy, which is what they didn't ask - I know exactly what they asked.

“And they then asked the young lad (Person X) involved in all of this. They need a transcript of what actually took place that day because that was not a thorough investigation.”

Dame Carolyn branded the relationship “deeply inappropriate” and said only “ongoing reviews” were held while conceding none of them established the full facts.

She told the Committee she first became aware of a rumour about the relationship in December 2019, two years after she joined ITV.

Phillip and the runner — identified only as Person X — both “categorically denied” any affair, according to reports.

ITV’s managing director Kevin Lygo said he confronted the Broom Cupboard star in February 2022 when he came out on This Morning and when he quit in May.

He added: “He looked me in the eye and promised me there was no truth to the rumours of this relationship. Because it was corroborated by Person X, I believed him and I believed his agent."
