It's true, Nottingham does have more women than men as Census results are released

For years there has long been stories that women outnumber men in Nottingham with the ratio 'two to one' often thrown into the mix. It has attracted many visitors to the city for nights out and stag dos in the hopes that is the case.

Whilst the two to one rule may just be an urban myth and something used to draw people the the city, the 2021 Census data reveals that women do in fact outweigh men in Nottingham. In the city last year, there were 164,700 women compared to 159,000 men.

That leaves 5,700 more females than males, not quite the ratio people who believed in the myth wanted. Compared to data from around the East Midlands, Nottingham has just a slightly wider difference between genders.

Census data shows that in Derby, there were 131,900 women compared to 129,500 men leaving a 2,400 gap. Whilst in Leicester there was a 4,400 population difference between males and females.

Nottinghamshire has a large gap between the genders with 420,000 women and 404,800 men leaving a 15,200 difference. So, the county seems to be the place to go if you want any chance in believing the myth.

Rutland and Charnwood buck the trend since they both have more men than women. Nationally, women outweigh men again as there are 30,420,100 females compared to 29,177,200 males in England and Wales.

The East Midlands follows this trend too with 2,478,100 women in the region compared to 2,402,100 men. It is pretty safe to say that women live longer in Nottingham than men.

Of the 2,000 people in Nottingham who are aged 90 and over, 1,400 of them are women and of the 3,300 people aged 85 to 89, 2,000 are women.
