In June 2025, Anton Carniaux, Microsoft France's director of public and legal affairs, appeared before a French senate commission and faced a pointed question: could he guarantee under oath that data belonging to French citizens, stored on French soil, would never be handed to US authorities without French authorisation?
His answer was: 'No, I cannot guarantee that, but, again, it has never happened before.' Not surprisingly, the second part of his response revealed more than it hid. It makes one ponder, is that where vendors will retreat.
