‘Is there a reason you didn’t leave a tip?’: California couple strolls out of an expensive steakhouse without tipping, their server isn’t having it

A California couple and their server at an upscale steakhouse in Los Angeles got into a heated confrontation that was caught on camera. The incident has sparked a debate online about tipping culture and whether servers are right to confront customers who don’t leave a gratuity.

The incident was shared on Instagram by a user named Jay (@jaywiththewaves) through a TikTok video. According to Jay, who says he witnessed the confrontation, the server walked up to the couple as they were leaving and asked, “Is there a reason you didn’t leave a tip?” The couple calmly replied, “No.”

The server then asked if the service had been bad, but the couple said nothing was wrong – they just didn’t want to tip. They walked out, and Jay overheard them questioning why the server had stopped them at the door.

Servers confronting customers over tips is a bad look, no matter how you feel about tipping

Many people argue that servers have every right to ask why a customer didn’t leave a tip, especially when they believe they gave good service. In the U.S., servers depend heavily on tips to make a living, so walking away with nothing can have a real impact on their income. California has seen its fair share of tense public confrontations lately, including a case where a California dad faces prison time for shooting at teen pranksters.

On the other hand, many others feel that confronting a customer over a tip is unprofessional and creates an uncomfortable situation. A server on Reddit commented, “Yeah it’s just not professional. Got no respect for that confronting behavior. But it is funny,” adding, “Saw it happen once and I couldn’t stop giggling. Stiffer got his lame ass called out in front of everyone. Server looked like an idiot in front of everyone.”

In a follow-up video, Jay suggested that the server handled the situation poorly and should have asked about the service quietly at the table, not at the door in front of other people. Jay also pointed out that low server wages are more of an employer issue and that servers should be paid a fair wage to begin with. California has also been in the news for other unsettling incidents, such as a story about a California couple being stalked by a van on a road trip.

According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, 49% of Americans say whether or not they tip depends on the situation. However, when it comes to sit-down restaurants, 92% of Americans say they always or often leave a tip. The same survey found that only 12% of people dining at fast-casual restaurants say they always or often tip.

Tipping amounts also vary depending on income and age. A majority of Americans – 57% – say they would tip 15% or less for an average meal at a sit-down restaurant. Higher-income adults tend to tip more, while those with lower incomes tend to tip less.
