Is the Stock Market Open on New Year's?

Is the stock market open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day? This year, the answer to that question is mixed. New Year's Eve falls on a Wednesday in 2025, which means the stock market is open for regular trading hours. But New Year's Day is one of several federal holidays in 2026 and is always a stock market holiday.

Bond traders, meanwhile, will get a little more time off to celebrate. That's because the bond market will not only be closed on Thursday, January 1, for New Year's Day, but it will also close early on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 2 pm Eastern Standard Time.

For those wondering what time does the market open for regular trading hours, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday.

Are banks open on New Year's Eve in 2025? The answer to that question is yes. Banks will be open on New Year's Eve because it falls on a Wednesday in 2025 and it is not a federal holiday. However, along with the stock and bond markets, banks will be closed on Wednesday, January 1, in observance of the New Year's Day holiday.

Below, we feature a full schedule of all stock market and bond market holidays for 2026.
