Irish Fleabag star Andrew Scott to take on four roles in same West End play

Actor Andrew Scott is taking on a major new challenge where he will play every role in a West End play.

The Fleabag star is set to star in a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play Uncle Vanya when he makes his return to London's West End.

The US entertainment trade publication Deadline reports that Vanya at the Duke of York's Theatre will see the Dubliner play "the four leading characters: Vanya; his late sister's husband, Serebryakov, and his new wife, Yelena; and Sonya, who is Serebryakov's daughter from his first marriage".

"There are five other roles - three supporting and two smaller featured parts," Deadline adds.

Olivier Award winner Scott described himself as "utterly thrilled" to be back on the London stage for the first time in a number of years.

“Heartbreaking, hilarious, sexy, devastating – the singular genius and extraordinary humanity of Mr Chekhov just knocks me out,” said Scott, last seen on stage at London’s Old Vic in Three Kings, live streamed during lockdown in 2020.

“It’s a genuine honour and a singular challenge to bring this giant of a play to life in the West End in this new way and I’m so excited to be doing it alongside such brilliant, playful and talented people.”

The Sherlock star will rehearse the Sam Yates-directed Vanya during the summer before a number of shows at the Richmond Theatre from late August to early September.

Vanya will then move to the Duke of York's Theatre in the West End from 15 September to 21 October.

The new adaptation of Uncle Vanya has been written by Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).
