Irish Cup quarter-final: Jamie McDonagh stunner fires Cliftonville into semis

Jamie McDonagh chalked up another ‘worldie’ in a Reds shirt to fire Cliftonville into the semi-finals of this year’s Samuel Gelston’s Irish Cup.

After providing an arrowed assist for Joe Gormley’s equaliser against a Coleraine side who led through Lyndon Kane, McDonagh won it in the 65th minute.

There seemed little danger when the 25-year-old, who joined the Reds from Glentoran in the summer, picked the ball up 25 yards from goal.

But a quick glance and a flourish of his right boot later, the ball was soaring past a stationary Gareth Deane and nestling in the top corner.

It was a strike worthy of winning any game and a goal that sealed the North Belfast club’s progress to the last four of the blue riband competition.

Coleraine had broken the deadlock in the 25th minute when a storming run from Kane resulted in the defender’s sixth goal of the season.

Launching an attack from the halfway line, Kane raced forward and played a one-two with Patrick Kelly before arrowing a rising shot past Luke McNicholas.

Kane’s opening strike was a shock for Cliftonville who had started on the front foot and created a flurry of half chances in the opening exchanges.

Ryan Curran directed a scissor kick wide of the upright in the sixth minute, while three minutes later Kris Lowe forced a save from Coleraine keeper Gareth Deane.

McDonagh also rifled over three minutes before the break as Paddy McLaughlin’s men chased a response.

It came in the 58th minute when Gormley, who was on the pitch less than two minutes as a replacement for Rory Hale, forced home his 16th goal of the season.

Television replays suggested McDonagh's laser beam of a cross may have struck an arm before billowing the net, but the goal stood and Cliftonville’s all-time record goalscorer raced off to celebrate.

It was 2-1 nine minutes later when McDonagh curled an unstoppable shot past Deane after being teed up by Ronan Doherty 25 yards out.
