Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts wet and windy conditions but good news for the weekend

Met Eireann has forecast wet and windy weather on the way for Ireland but there is good news for the weekend

Heavy rain is due over the next few nights with "strong" and "gusty" winds picking up on Thursday night. It will be a wet start to the day on Friday as well, with more heavy rain overnight which could lead to spot flooding in some areas.

However, high pressure is expected to build on Sunday which will bring "lots of dry weather with some sunshine too".

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Some uncertainty in the forecast for the weekend. However, current indications suggest the winds will be mostly light with any lingering overnight rain clearing early Saturday morning with further falls of rain holding off until after dark.

"High pressure is then expected to build over Ireland on Sunday bringing lots of dry weather with some sunshine too."

And the good weather could continue for a few days as a forecaster said: "Turning drier later this weekend and into early next week."

Here is an overview of the weather for the rest of the week:

Wednesday, February 15

Overnight rain will clear quickly into the Irish Sea this morning with mostly dry weather and spells of hazy sunshine following for a time. However, during the afternoon a further spell of rain will begin to edge into Atlantic counties, extending nationwide later this evening. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

Rather wet and breezy tonight. While the rain will ease off during the second half of the night, some mist and fog will set in, as brisk southerlies ease. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

Thursday, February 16

A damp and misty or foggy start to tomorrow Thursday with mostly cloudy skies. Some sunny spells will however develop with mostly dry conditions for a time. However, scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will follow from the west and northwest later. Parts of the southeast will stay fully dry throughout though. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, mildest in the southeast. West to southwest winds will be mostly moderate in strength before later freshening.

On Thursday night, it will be rather windy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, heaviest in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, in fresh to strong and gusty west to southwest winds with gales on Atlantic coasts.

Friday, February 17

Brisk westerly winds will gradually abate on Friday morning. Cloudy and wet for a time with somewhat drier and brighter conditions setting in during the afternoon, all except the far southwest where rain and drizzle will linger. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, in moderating westerly winds.

Becoming wet again overnight with hill, mist and coastal fog all in near calm. The rain will be heavy at times with possible spot flooding. Turning drier but colder later. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 8 degrees, coldest in the northwest.

This weekend

Some uncertainty in the forecast for the weekend. However, current indications suggest the winds will be mostly light with any lingering overnight rain clearing early Saturday morning with further falls of rain holding off until after dark. High pressure is then expected to build over Ireland on Sunday bringing lots of dry weather with some sunshine too.
