Ireland’s forecasters seem to be ‘at odds’ over a date for the arrival of springtime conditions as a subzero freeze approaches.
Sleet and snow are mentioned in the forecast over the coming days, bringing a sharp chill in the air for many.
Despite the uncertainty, one weather expert has pinpointed the return of milder weather, but not before a big drop in temperatures.

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly took to Twitter and confirmed: “Weather models at odds over how long the cold lasts next week. Latest updates show mild back in by 10th on ECM model. However the GFS keeps the cold going.”
Areas in the east and north will drop to -1 on Monday night as the sleet and snow begin to fall on higher ground.
At this point Met Eireann’s forecast for Ireland expects milder conditions from the middle of next week, here’s what the next few days will look like:
Today
Today will be a largely dry day isolated sunny spells and light showers. Highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees in light variable breezes.
Tonight will be mainly dry and cloudy. Lowest temperatures of minus 1 to plus 2 degrees in a light variable breeze.
Saturday
Tomorrow, Saturday, once again a mainly dry day with a few brighter breaks and isolated light showers. Temperatures between 5 and 7 degrees in light variable breezes.
Saturday night will continue mainly dry with just isolated light showers. Lowest temperatures zero to plus 2 degrees in light westerly winds.
Sunday
Sunday will see little or no change, mainly dry but showers a little more frequent, especially in the north. Temperatures in the afternoon of 7 or 8 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly breezes.
Sunday night lowest temperatures will be 2 or 3 degrees with light winds. It will be mainly dry and where skies clear temperatures will fall below freezing.
Monday, March 6
A freshening northerly wind on Monday will bring rain southwards over the country, introducing colder conditions. Daytime temperatures of 5 or 6 degrees in the north, still 7 or 8 degrees further to the south, and then falling through the second half of the day as the rain moves southwards.
Monday night will be very cold with temperatures dropping well below freezing.
Tuesday, March 7
Tuesday will be a cold day with the chance of any showers turning to sleet and snow on hills and mountains.
There is a great deal of uncertainty beyond Tuesday with current indication suggesting a spell of rain from the southwest on Wednesday will reintroduce milder conditions for the second half of the week.
