- Ionna, the American EV fast charging network backed by automakers, is expanding quickly.

- That’s just the beginning, though, as Ionna plans on having 30,000 DC fast charging bays by 2030.
Ionna has ramped up the installation of its top-notch EV charging stations in the past months, bringing its 400-kilowatt chargers to significantly more people across the United States.
The network added 50% more plugs and 74% more locations in the past six months, and now has 1,488 charging ports at 174 stations throughout the country, according to the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC).
Back in March, Ionna reached an important milestone, energizing its 100th station and checking off its 1,000th individual charging bay. As a reminder, Ionna opened its first DC fast chargers in December 2024, and just a year later, the network had grown to 51 locations offering 478 ports. It was the fastest rollout of any EV charging company, and Ionna doesn’t seem to back down from its ambitious expansion plan.
By 2030, the automaker-backed company wants to blanket the country with 30,000 charging bays. Because Ionna uses dual-cable Alpitronic stalls almost exclusively, this means 15,000 individual stalls that can deliver up to 400 kilowatts of power to each EV in need of a top-up.
Making things even more interesting is the fact that Ionna doesn’t rely on quantity alone. According to JD Power’s latest Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Public Charging Study, Ionna offers the best charging experience in the country, with the company scoring 803 points in its first year.
That’s not a surprise. Several InsideEVs writers have used Ionna chargers, and every time the experience was refreshingly flawless. The chargers are new, fast, and always working. Plus, there’s no need for an app, as all dispensers have built-in credit card readers to make charging as easy as possible.
Plug and Charge is also supported on several EVs, and Ionna has started offering discounts to some founding brands. General Motors, BMW, Hyundai, Genesis, and Mercedes-Benz EV owners can enjoy discounts between 10% and 20% as long as they use Plug and Charge or their manufacturer’s smartphone apps to manage the charging session.
