Invincible is planning more "side quests" even after season 4's controversial episode scored a record-low rating

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has confirmed that season 5 will feature more standalone storylines that don't originate from the comics. This comes after season 4's self-contained episode, 'Hurm', divided viewers.

The outing took Mark Grayson to Hell for an adventure with a character called Damien Darkblood. The storyline didn't feature in the comics and didn't resonate with all viewers, securing just 6.5 on IMDb and sitting as the show's lowest-rated episode.

Speaking to The Direct, Kirkman was asked if he has any more plans for original storylines in the new season. "I mean, any lack of new storylines in the television show is not due to a dearth of ideas from the writers," he replied. "The writers on the show have tons of ideas, and so, yeah, you can expect more side quests and things that will be working their way into the overall narrative of the show as we go on, just because it's exciting to us and it's a fun thing to do."

His co-showrunner Simon Racioppa did also clarify that these storylines still need to feel essential to the show's overarching plot. He added to the publication: "It just needs to feel organic to the show, right? Like, the big thing for us is there shouldn't be any episode you can skip. Every episode, we only get eight of them a year, eight of them a season. Every episode has to move Mark's story forward, has to be important. You shouldn't be able to remove anything."

However, this doesn't necessarily mean plot-wise, but can also be a character development for Mark as well.

Details on what new storylines could feature on the show remain under lock and key at the moment, but we do know that Invincible season 5 is on the way. Prime Video has already renewed the show and it's well into development with voice acting already finished on the new season.
