An investigation has been launched after a man was injured on a construction site on Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to the development which will be known as The Cedars in the Leafield Close area of Birtley at around 5.30pm on Tuesday (March 21). Despite the attendance of the Great North Air Ambulance, the casualty was taken to hospital by road and it was confirmed on Wednesday by Northumbria Police that his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The Health and Safety Executive confirmed that they are investigating the website and issued a statement to ChronicleLive, which read: "We are aware of an incident on a construction site in Birtley on 21 March 2023 and are making enquires to find out what happened."

The site is managed by Vistry, a part of the Countryside Partnerships group. A Countryside Partnerships spokesperson commented: "There was an incident yesterday evening on a Vistry site involving one of our contractors at the Birtley development. Paramedics responded swiftly, taking the individual to hospital where they are receiving further treatment. We wish them a full and speedy recovery.
"The safety of our staff and contractors is always our number one priority. We are working closely with all the relevant parties to investigate the cause of this incident.”
A statement from the Great North Air Ambulance read: "Yesterday our critical care team were activated at 5.45pm to reports of an industrial incident in Birtley. They arrived on scene at 5.58pm and worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess the patient’s injuries, before the patient was taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service."
An NEAS statement issued on Monday read: "We were called to attend an incident at a private address in the Birtley area just after 5.30pm today. We dispatched a paramedic ambulance, air ambulance and clinical team leader who treated one patient before the paramedic crew conveyed to hospital."
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 6pm yesterday (Tuesday) we received a report of a work place incident that resulted in a man suffering injuries in the Leafield Close area of Birtley. Emergency services attended the scene and the man was taken to hospital.
"Thankfully his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The matter will be referred to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)."
