Inside the unique Newcastle teahouse where tea is 'a way of life'

April 21 marks National Tea Day, where people across the UK celebrate the nation’s love for our most beloved beverage - but for this unique teahouse in Newcastle, every day is tea day.

Tea Sutra is described as “a tea lover’s paradise” - and with a menu boasting more than 120 different varieties of tea, one of the largest selections in the country, it’s hard to argue otherwise. Having opened its doors on Leazes Park Road back in August 2011, the teahouse has been a true hidden gem of the city centre for over a decade and has always aimed to offer something a little different to your typical English tearoom.

With tea sourced from growers across the world, Tea Sutra takes its inspiration from several faraway places. Owner Akuppa first fell in love with tea during a trip to Barcelona, where he visited a teahouse in the city’s Gothic Quarter. It was there Akuppa says that he first realised tea was much more than just a drink - it was “an atmosphere, an aesthetic, and a way of life”.
