An inmate at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland, is under suspicion for the death of another prisoner inside his cell. The victim, identified as Robert Warren, 28, was found dead on Monday, prompting a homicide investigation by the Maryland State Police.
The suspect, also an inmate at the maximum-security facility in Allegany County, has been identified but not yet charged. Authorities are withholding the suspect's name until formal charges are filed.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was alerted to the incident by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit. Autopsy results confirmed Warren's death as a homicide, leading to a thorough investigation.
Once the investigation is complete, evidence will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and potential charges.
This tragic event follows a recent violent incident at the same facility where a prisoner reportedly stabbed two correctional officers on November 8. The officers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly treated at a nearby hospital. Additional staff members were also assessed for minor injuries, while the suspect in that case is currently being questioned by investigators.
Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of both inmates and staff at North Branch Correctional Institution as they continue to investigate these disturbing incidents.
