In 2023, Connecticut removed Strong Pond Dam after 20 years of planning. 3 years later, 10 upstream miles are open to fish, reconnecting 20 miles of habitat for wildlife

For more than two decades, plans were taking shape to remove Strong Pond Dam from Connecticut's Norwalk River. That work finally became reality in September 2023, when the dam, also known as Dana Dam or Merwin Meadows Dam, was removed in Wilton. The project restored natural stream flows, improved aquatic habitat and opened 10 upstream miles of the Norwalk River to fish and other aquatic organisms, as per a report by the U.S. EPA Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Together, the restored area now contributes to 20 miles of connected riverine habitat stretching from Long Island Sound.
