Ian Wright identifies the five leaders at Arsenal who have silenced Mikel Arteta critics

Ian Wright believes there are five "characters" emerging in Arsenal's side after their 1-0 away win against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

Bukayo Saka's first-half goal - the club's 2,000th in the Premier League - was enough to give Mikel Arteta's team all three points. The result leaves Arsenal fourth in the table, four points ahead of Manchester United in fifth with a game in hand.

The Gunners boast one of the youngest sides in the Premier League, with the likes of Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Ben White, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney and Aaron Ramsdale all impressing this term - despite their tender years.

And Wright, who retired as the club's record scorer with 185 goals to his name, believes Arsenal's young guns are establishing an identity. The Gunners haven't always been blessed with strong leaders, one of the main criticisms of the Arsene Wenger era.

"Long may it continue," Wright told DAZN after the Villa win. "We're going to need more goals from other places, as well, but you have to mention the defence. Bernd Leno did fantastically well when he came [into the team] today.

"Villa, obviously, didn't put him under as much pressure as I thought they would. But defensively, midfield - everything was so solid. Arsenal winning games away from home like that is brilliant to see, it's really good to see."

On leaders, Wright added: "A lot of pundits have been very joyous in talking about Arsenal and how weak they are, [having] no leaders. Look at them now... this Arsenal team are a young side, we're starting to see characters grow in the side.

"We're starting to see people like Ben White, Gabriel [Magalhaes], Kieran Tierney, Odegaard, Thomas Partey. We're talking about five, six, seven, eight players are getting an eight out of 10 every week. That's what you have to do.

"And then it's up to the owners and the manager and the recruitment to bolt on the kind of players that are going to fit in the squad and continue to help them improve."

Arteta praised his team's performance at full-time. "We talked before the match about the need to be sharp and physical," said the Spaniard. "We controlled the game. We could have scored more and that is where we have to take the team.

"We have to put chances away; in the Premier League, you cannot dominate 96 minutes, this is impossible, but I'm really pleased with how we competed in every phase of the play. I'm really proud of the boys. They are showing character, courage and quality.

"You can see the connection they have. It is phenomenal to watch. If you want to be a top team, you have to win home and away. We are doing that consistently and we have to continue. We really want [the top four] and we are going to give it a go."
