'I wanted a romantic Valentine's meal with my husband - but he had plans with his mum'

A woman whose husband has never been a fan of Valentine's Day wasn't exactly thrilled when she learned he'd made plans to have dinner with his mother instead. According to this ticked-off wife, he texted her shortly after midday to apologise as he'd forgotten what day it was.

She forgave him, knowing full well how busy they both are, and naturally assumed they'd do something together later on. Although Valentine's Day isn't a huge priority for her either, the couple will usually enjoy a nice dinner together and exchange small gifts.

A little while later, she asked him about what he wanted to do for dinner that evening, still under the assumption that they would be spending the evening together as a couple. It was then that he told her he already had plans with his mum and invited her to join them if she wished. She did not.

She finally reached breaking point about one hour later, when her husband informed her his mum had now cancelled their dinner and asked if she still wanted to grab some food. By this point, she was done and didn't hold back.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Honest_Difference453, the by-then-furious wife recalled: "That's when I lost it. I cursed him out for essentially making me feel like a second choice and forgetting about me that day.

"Not once during the day did he even say I love you. He told me I was overreacting. That he forgot but I was being really hateful and he takes me out all the time the rest of the year, why is today a big deal? It's just a 'stupid f****** holiday'."

They didn't speak for a couple of days after this. Yesterday, he tried apologising again, but followed this 'with almost the exact same argument from before', which she found to be dismissive of her feelings.

She continued: "He believes I just wanted an excuse to rip into him. I have no more energy to try to make him see why I'm so hurt by his actions and honestly don't know if I'll ever get over how hurt I am by his response to this whole thing.

"He said, 'I would have made it up to you but I'm not going to grovel and be your emotional punching bag'. Wow."

One fellow Reddit user advised: "If you're still together next year, consider booking yourself a nice staycation at a luxury resort and spa next Valentine's day (think hot tub, massages, etc.). Do not tell him where.

"When he wonders where you are, tell him you're treating yourself to some self-love because you deserve it! He'll be desperate to join you."

Another commented: "He did treat you like a second choice. For f*** sake, he was going to hang out with his mummy on a lovers' holiday. Maybe cursing him out was a bit hurtful, fine he can have one point in the 'technicality' column.

"Just because he chooses to belittle the holiday himself doesn't mean it doesn't have a little bit of meaning to others."
