'I want to give my twins matching names - but my family say I'll ruin their lives'

When it comes to naming a baby, you can spend hours mulling over your options before finally settling on one that ticks all the right boxes. While you might love the name you've picked out, there's no guarantee everyone else in your life will.

That's exactly what one couple found after announcing the "unconventional names" they've shortlisted for their twins. Taking to Reddit, the expecting mum said: "I'm currently pregnant with twins, one boy one girl, and my fiancé and I are thinking of giving them kind of unconventional names.

"I recently told my family some of our top options and they got mad, telling us we’re going to ruin our kids’ lives if we choose these names."

She went on to explain how she wants to give her twins "matching" names that "play off each other".

"The names include Phoenix (girl) and Dragon (boy), Heaven (girl) and Earth (boy), Moon (girl) and Sun (boy), Angel (girl) and Demon (boy), and Gold (girl) and Silver (boy)," she added.

"We know these are kind of unconventional, unique type names but we both really like this idea so far especially since we’re having twins of opposite genders.

"My parents think we’re crazy and should reconsider."

After seeing her parents' reaction, the expecting mum says she is now torn between standing her ground or going down a different route - and has taken to Reddit to ask for users' thoughts.

In response, one user said: "It sounds like you've been playing too many Pokémon games recently.

"Their your kids, name them what you like but in my honest opinion, these are names you just like and you aren't considering how they will impact their interactions with the world."

Not holding back, another user added: "What kind of names are those? Literally a middle schooler puts more effort into names for their fan fiction than you have with those names.

"I agree with your family, names aren’t just something you personally refer to them as and it’s isolated, you essentially are branding them for their entire professional lives.

"I can assure you that if a hiring manager saw the name Dragon on a resume they’d throw it out.

"Kids are also ruthless they’ll tear those names apart and make fun of them and you for choosing such dumb names. In the end your kids will resent you."

A third user said: "I hate to say it but as a twin, you would be the a***hole.

"It’s really hard as a twin to be treated as though you aren’t half of a unit. You’re almost never just you, you’re 'one of the twins'. Matchy names would make that worse.

"It may be cute for a while but long term it could damage not only their relationship with you but with each other.

"If you really want paired naming, consider doing it as middle names, which they can embrace or ignore as they choose."
