The domestic assault charge against Olympic boxer Harry Garside has been dropped.
The 25-year-old was returning home from South Africa after finishing runner-up on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! when he was arrested at Sydney International Airport.
He was charged with one count of domestic violence-related common assault over an alleged incident on March 1 at Bellevue Hill in Sydney’s east.
Garside appeared at Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, where NSW Police said the charge and apprehended domestic violence order application had been withdrawn.
“Today I have been vindicated,” he said in a statement shared to Instagram.
“Moments ago the police prosecutor informed the court that they have dropped all matters against me.
“This was because my lawyers provided the recordings and communications that gave the police a full understanding of what happened — clearing me of any wrongdoing whatsoever.”
Garside has denied the allegation against him since his arrest.
“The conduct of police in the presence of the media at Sydney International Airport yesterday took me completely by surprise,” he said in a statement shared to Instagram on May 3.
“I categorically deny the allegations of violence and dispute the account given to police.
“I have nothing to hide and will defend myself against this charge.
“The police have not been provided with all of the facts and I am confident that my reputation will be vindicated through the legal process.
“Because the matter is before the courts, I won’t be saying anything further.”
Outside of court, Garside told reporters the charge had taken a “massive” toll on him and his family, particularly his mum who is receiving treatment for cancer.
“She was almost more stressed about this than she was about what she’s going through,” he said, per news.com.au.
“At least now she can focus on herself and focus on her wellbeing.”
