Huge fire came frighteningly close to famous National Trust holiday let home overlooking Rhossili Bay

A huge blaze that tore up acres of grassland at Rhossili Bay in Gower came close to engulfing one of the National Trust's most popular holiday let properties.

Locals described witnessing flames and huge plumes of smoke lit up bright orange and billowing across the sky above Rhossili, and some took to social media to warn others later that evening. Photos show the fierce fire taking hold of grassland overlooking the beach, not far from the National Trust's Old Rectory property and a field of sheep. The property is so in demand it's often booked up two years in advance.

It's not yet known what caused the fire. WalesOnline has contacted Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service for information on the blaze - when we receive it, we will add it to this article. You can get more Swansea news and other story updates by subscribing to our newsletters here.

A spokesperson for National Trust Cymru said of the blaze, which started at around 6pm on Wednesday, March 23: "We are thankful to the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service for responding swiftly to the news of the recent wildfire on Rhossili Down. We are still assessing the impact of the damage to the Down, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

"All fires on SSSI’s require a Burning Management Plan (BMP) and permission from the landowner before going ahead. The Trust works hard to manage our land to limit the damage caused by uncontrolled burns by carefully removing scrub and introducing firebreaks outside of the breeding season, in the winter months.

"Sadly, the wildlife will have suffered and habitat been damaged as a result. We are pleased to confirm that the much-loved Rhossili Old Rectory, a Trust-owned holiday cottage, was not damaged by the wildfire. Uncontrolled wildfires are a danger to people, places and nature. Help us protect the Gower and places we care for by calling the Fire Service immediately if you spot any signs of a wildfire."

What is The Old Rectory?

The Old Rectory is a historic cottage offering panoramic views of Rhossili Bay and Worms Head and is the only building on the bay. Built in the 1800s, the property was first used as a base for radar workers during the Second World War - but has also been used by actors and tv producers for popular BBC series Torchwood. The property was renovated recently and boasts four bedrooms, a large kitchen and a gorgeous garden among the usual features.
