How Novak Djokovic won the China Open with the help of another walkover

  • Novak Djokovic secured his first title in nearly a year by winning the China Open in Beijing after opponent Alex De Minaur retired early in the second set.
  • The victory maintains Djokovic's undefeated record at the tournament, earning him a seventh China Open title and his 102nd tour-level trophy overall.
  • The 39-year-old Serbian has now won at least one tour-level title in each of the last 21 consecutive years.
  • De Minaur abruptly withdrew due to a thigh injury after winning the opening game of the second set, following a tight first-set tie-break.
  • Both men had reached the final without having to complete their matches on Monday – Djokovic thanks to the much-publicised disqualification of Daniil Medvedev , while De Minaur’s opponent Hubert Hurkacz pulled the plug because of injury.
