How Meghan Markle's ties to UK have been cut- and the one cause she's still linked to

When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry turned their backs on royal life in March 2020 in favour for a new beginning across the Atlantic, they were forced to sever many of their links to the UK.

Despite their desire to continue working with organisations close to their hearts, the Queen wasn't having any of their 'half-in, half-out' approach.

Meghan hasn't returned to the UK since moving to the US, and Harry has only returned for a handful of family events.

But as they mark two years away from royal life, more of the Duchess' ties are being cut.

Just yesterday, it was announced that another of her charity patronages was coming to an end.

It was revealed that her patronage with animal charity Mayhew - one of the few roles she kept when she and Harry stepped back as full-time royals - was over.

The London-based charity announced the end of the patronage saying it had been "an incredible privilege" to work closely with Meghan.

And Meghan said: "Though my time as patron of Mayhew has come to a close, my unwavering support has not.

"I encourage each of you to support in whatever way you are able. The emotional support of a rescue animal is unparalleled—as you’ll soon realize: it is not you who saves them, it is they who save you."

The ending of the patronage with Mayhew comes after Meghan was also forced to give up two royal patronages in February 2021 - when she and Harry confirmed following a 12-month review they would not be returning to their royal roles.

They were with the National Theatre and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Meghan's role at the National Theatre is said to have been a major source of tension with Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

According to a source, when the Queen handed Meghan the theatre patronage, the news did not go down too well with Camilla.

They told the Times : "She really wanted it. She was pretty miffed when it went to Meghan."

However, Meghan managed just one official visit to the National Theatre before she and Harry announced they were stepping down as senior royals and moving to the US for a new life.

And just last month, it was revealed that it would be Camilla taking over as royal patron.

This means that Meghan is now only linked to one cause in the UK - Smart Works, an organisation that helps women get back to work

Last month, it was revealed that Meghan and Harry's foundation Archewell had awarded a grant to Smart Works in order to mark Women's History Month.

So with just one charity patronage in the UK, many royal insiders wonder whether she will ever return to Britain, where she and Harry retain a home in theory at Frogmore Cottage, reports the Express.

Their 10-month-old daughter Lilibet has never met her family in the UK and their son Archie, who will be three in May, has not been here since autumn 2019.

Earlier this year, Harry claimed he is unable to bring Meghan and their two children to the UK due to a lack of security after they lost their police protection when they stepped back as working royals.

And they didn't return for Prince Philip's memorial service at Westminster Abbey last week.

But speaking in February, biographer Tom Bower, who is writing a book about Meghan, said she has no intention to return to the UK and "doesn't care" if she is welcome in London.

Writing in the Sun, he said: "At the moment, Meghan’s ultimate destination is unclear, but she certainly has the backing to make a bid to star as an American politician.

"In parallel, Britain is a lost cause for the Sussexes.

"In truth, I suspect Meghan no longer cares whether she is welcome in London.

"She has no intention of returning."
