The Houston Texans unwittingly are going to signal whether they expect to compete in the land of the relevant or spend their first season with new coach DeMeco Ryans toiling in the wilderness of rebuilding.
The 2023 NFL draft kicks off Thursday night, and the Texans have two first-round selections to shore up significant holes in their roster. At Nos. 2 and 12 overall, Houston has enough capital to address the quarterback position, which is fortuitous given the talent in the 2023 class.
However, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young appears to be a heavy favorite to go No. 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers. As such, the Texans may be evaluating whether to take a quarterback at all. Going with anything other than quarterback in the first round at either of the spots would anger Texans fans, who have spent a year believing this would be the draft quarterback was addressed and the team could start winning more than four games again.
The first night will set the tone of the draft.
