Horror as two-year-old boy dies in 'fireplace accident' in Wigan

A two-year-old boy has died after a fireplace toppled onto him in a horrific accident at his home in Wigan, according to reports.

The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday afternoon as the youngster was reportedly dancing with his sister.

Neighbours told local news outlet Wigan Today that the fireplace suddenly fell, crushing the child.

Emergency services rushed to Fisher Close, Worsley Mesnes, around 2.15pm.

Despite paramedics' best efforts, the boy succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at hospital.

A large police presence remained at the scene throughout the afternoon.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to reports regarding a concern for welfare of a child on Fisher Close, Wigan. Sadly, a two-year-old boy later died at hospital."
