Hope for Sycamore Gap tree after shoots appear on its stump: Tech & Science Daily podcast

Listen here on your chosen podcast platform.

Tony Gates, Chief Executive of Northumberland National Park Authority, reveals good news about the felled Sycamore Gap tree - that it may now live on after green shoots have been found on its stump.

The original tree was a hugely-loved landmark, and when it was illegally felled last year, it triggered an outpouring of public emotion.

Tony says that the discovery of these shoots will offer hope to many people, although it’s not clear yet if they will lead to anything.

In order to give the shoots the best chance of survival and growth, Northumberland National Park is asking for people to please respect a few rules when visiting the area.

Sensitive odour sensors, coupled with wind direction sensors, were set up in desert and forest environments in Nevada. They were able to localise the source of a smell with reasonable accuracy based on the intensity and length of each ‘whiff’.

And the rest

Thunderstorms and flood warnings in parts of England and Wales, new AI companion ‘Friend’ launches but it’s like something straight out of Black Mirror, plus Netflix’s Squid Game season two finally gets a release date.
