Former Home Improvement teen star Jonathan Taylor Thomas was detained after allegedly obstructing an officer in Westlake Village, California, on Monday.
Thomas, 45, was a passenger in a vehicle found blocking traffic at a green light, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
After noticing that the driver appeared intoxicated, officers conducted a sobriety test during which Thomas allegedly repeatedly disrupted their investigation.
Authorities said Thomas (whose legal name is Jonathan Taylor Thomas Weiss) appeared intoxicated, continually exited the vehicle and approached the deputies, distracting them from their investigation,” according to KABC.
Deputies then attempted to detain Weiss for obstruction and public intoxication, at which point Weiss allegedly kicked a deputy in the stomach.
According to arrest records seen by The Independent, Thomas was detained at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station’s jail at 12:32 a.m. and released more than 34 hours later.
The driver was also arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
No charges have been filed against either man. The sheriff’s department said the case will be submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether to file charges.
Thomas’s representatives did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.
Just months ago, Tim Allen said plans for a Home Improvement reboot had stalled because of “personality problems” among the cast.
The sitcom ran for eight seasons on ABC from 1991 to 1999 and followed the Taylor family in suburban Detroit. Allen played Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, a television home-improvement host whose confidence with power tools far exceeded his competence.
Patricia Richardson portrayed Tim’s wife, Jill, while Zachery Ty Bryan, Thomas and Taran Noah Smith played their three sons: Brad, Randy and Mark, respectively.
“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen said in a June interview with Us Weekly.
“They’ve got their own issues. I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”
In 2020, Bryan, 44, was arrested following an incident involving his girlfriend and later pleaded guilty to menacing and fourth-degree assault charges. He has since faced multiple arrests, including DUI-related offenses and probation violations.
Meanwhile, Thomas, 45, left Home Improvement before the final season to focus on his education and went on to attend Harvard University. Richardson said in a 2024 podcast appearance that he isn’t “interested in acting.”
At 17, Smith made headlines for marrying a woman 16 years his senior. They divorced in 2007 after nearly six years of marriage. Smith has not acted since Home Improvement.
