Hinkley believes something special is happening at Port

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley believes something special is brewing at Alberton after the Power secured a 12th-straight win in the most dramatic of fashion.

After a shaky start to their campaign in losing two of the first three matches, Port have charged to 13-2 to be in serious contention to win the club's second AFL premiership and first since 2004.

The Power's club record winning run started in round four when a kick after-the-siren from Sydney's Ollie Florent dropped just short of the line at the SCG.

On Saturday night, Dan Houston stepped up and nailed one of the best matchwinners in VFL/AFL history by roosting his kick from outside the 50m arc on a tricky angle in wet conditions to seal Port's memorable four-point win over Essendon at the MCG.

The major will comfortably sit alongside other memorable goals after-the-siren in recent times, including Collingwood's Jamie Elliott who sunk the deflated Bombers with a kick from the boundary at the MCG last year.

"It was remarkable," Hinkley said of Houston's heroics.

"There's something going on at the moment for us and we're believers in hanging in and it seems to work.

"It's been pretty emotional week in lots of ways.

"There's been some special things happen to us as a footy club and to me and our family."

Hinkley was delighted to end a big personal week with a famous win.

The 56-year-old's grandson was born earlier in the week, while Hinkley said another grandson's birthday was on Saturday.

"I said to the (Port) boys in there (in the rooms), there's some sort of story getting written at the moment, for lots of reasons," Hinkley said.

"I'm a bit of a believer in those reasons help you out when you need them and I thought we got some help from above."

Hinkley remains out-of-contract at season's end, but coach and club are no in rush to commit to a new deal.

When Port slumped to 1-2 in April, club legend Warren Tredrea labelled Hinkley's position at the Power "untenable".

But Port are 13-2, equal with Collingwood, and looking at grabbing a crucial top-two position to secure them a home qualifying final.
