There are a number of unspoken rules out on the roads, with most people offering common courtesy to other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
However, a study by the car insurance team at Comparethemarket has found one common expression of on-the-road politeness could leave drivers facing hefty fines and penalty points. The research also reveals many drivers are unaware that certain actions which are often perceived as good manners, are actually illegal.
Julie Daniels from Comparethemarket has warned some "unofficial rules" could leave you out of pocket, as reported by Devon Live.

Motorists, therefore, should be warned against waving at other drivers to say thank you. Ms Daniels said: "Our research shows waving to say thank you is the most common driving courtesy, as over 60% of drivers admit to doing so. However, they may not realise that they are risking a £1,000 fine and three penalty points by doing so.
"The Highway Code 2 states you should drive with both hands on the wheel wherever possible, to ensure drivers are always in full control of the vehicle. If you are looking to thank other drivers for any reason, do so in a safe - and legal - manner, such as getting your passenger to wave on your behalf."
