Higher Energy Bills to Hit Millions of Britons from October: Ofgem Cap Reaches 3-Year High

Millions of households across Britain will pay more for their gas and electricity from 1 October, after regulator Ofgem confirmed a 4 per cent rise in its energy price cap for the final three months of 2026.

The new cap sets a typical annual bill for a dual-fuel household paying by direct debit at £1,723 ($2,343), up £60 ($82) a year, or around £5 ($7) a month, from the current £1,663 ($2,262). Ofgem said the cap covers roughly 22M households on default tariffs, limiting what suppliers can charge per unit of energy rather than putting a ceiling on any single bill. About 11M households on fixed deals will not be affected.
