As homeowners look for ways to cut their energy use and reduce their reliance on gas, increasingly, heat pumps are becoming an attractive alternative to gas boilers. They produce fewer carbon emissions and, in the right property, can help to lower heating costs. Government support has made the upfront investment more manageable, too, with eligible households able to claim up to £7,500 towards installation, through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
But a heat pump is still a major home improvement, and the financial calculation goes beyond running costs alone. Homeowners may also wonder whether installing one will make their property more appealing to future buyers, improve its energy performance certificate (EPC) rating or even increase its eventual sale price.
