The UK’s stricter student visa compliance rules are creating fresh challenges for universities and international applicants, including Indians, with institutions facing penalties if they fail to meet the government’s prescribed standards.
Since June 1, 2026, UK universities have had to meet tighter requirements under the Home Office’s Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA), which monitors their recruitment and hosting of international students. The assessment requires universities to maintain a sponsored study visa refusal rate below 5 per cent, against the earlier threshold of 10 per cent. The enrolment rate must be at least 95 per cent, up from 90 per cent, while the course completion requirement is currently 85 per cent and will rise to 90 per cent in June 2027.
