Have a Gander at Hull retailer's cost of living aid as app helps tackle food waste

Independent Hull retailer Sewell on the Go has joined a rapidly growing initiative to reduce food waste and ease the cost of living crisis.

It has linked up with world-first mobile app Gander to allow customers to snap up bargains. Real time information is shared on price cuts as shelf ell by dates close in. Stores on Chanterlands Avenue and in Cottingham are the first to be integrated.

Sarah Watson, sales manager for Sewell, said: “As a business, we’re excited to work with Gander. The colourful app makes it easy for users to find discounted products that could otherwise be wasted. It’s helping customers save money and supports our sustainability goals by reducing waste – a win-win!

“We know in today’s climate, with the rising cost of living, that it’s really important for our customers to save money. The app shows users any items that we’ve reduced before coming into the store, making bargains really easy to find.”

It comes just weeks after the wider Sewell Group was recognised for its work in giving opportunities, and - once again - as a top company to work for.

Gander’s head of customer engagement and business development, Stacey Williams, said: “We are delighted to be extending the implementation of Gander across the UK and through working with Sewell on the Go we will continue our mission to reduce food waste. With seamless integration, retailers have no down time and shoppers can instantly start saving on their weekly shop.

“Available for Sewell on the Go customers to download on their smartphones, Gander uses real-time to highlight reduced-to-clear food items on shelves near their homes. Instead of reaching relatively few customers who happen to be in the store at the time the products are nearing the end of their shelf-life, Gander has the potential to reach thousands of people in the vicinity of Chanterlands Avenue and Cottingham, allowing shoppers to nip in and bag a bargain, while enabling retailers to vastly cut their food waste.

“Engagement with the app from retailers and shoppers alike has been positive and we hope to continue building upon our new relationship with Sewell on the Go.”

The Gander app can be downloaded via the Apple or Android app stores.
