Harry Kane injury boost for Tottenham and England ahead of Qatar World Cup 2022

Harry Kane has said that working with a new physio has reduced his risk of ankle injuries, which means that the England captain hopes to be at his best when the World Cup begins in November.

The Tottenham striker has not been suffering from the same problems which caused him to miss the majority of the first half of 2019 and left him lacking match fitness in the Champions League final against Liverpool in Madrid. This, he revealed to the media ahead of England's crucial Nations League fixture against Italy on Friday night.

Kane has revealed that is was a torn hamstring suffered against Southampton on New Year's Day 2020 which prompted him to take extra precautionary action by seeking outside help for his problems. The 29-year-old revealed that he felt more confident about staying fit when asked by reporters in Milan on Thursday.

'Touch wood' he said when asked about whether or not his injury problems were behind him. He did not reveal the identity of the physio, but explained: “We’ve been working together for nearly three years. He’s been really great for me. We’ve worked for hours and hours over the three years, built up a really good relationship and I feel like he’s really helped me.

“I’ve seen changes in my body in terms of what my ankles were like before and now after. I’m in a totally different place, so it’s really pleasing. I’ll use him maybe one week of the month. He doesn’t live in the UK so he comes over one week a month and stays with me.”

Kane has been ever present for Tottenham and Antonio Conte this season, and the club are less reliant on his goal scoring following the signing of Richarlison and with Golden Boot winner Son Heung-min in the squad. This means that the club will be more able to manage his work load and Kane said that he has become more aware of when to push his body.

“I was struggling to play consistently throughout a season,” he revealed. “Especially when you come up to major tournaments, it’s great to know your body is in a good place. You can get injured at any moment, whether it’s a tackle or a bad movement, but I think when you’re free in your mind and you’ve been playing consistently for a while, it definitely helps with your mindset.

“I wasn’t anxious but I was frustrated. I kept getting ankle injuries and that led to a bigger hamstring injury. As I’ve got older and more mature, you learn more about your body. When you can push and when you should not push too hard. You learn as you go on. That’s helped me to consistently play at the level I have.”
