GUWAHATI: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night for allegedly murdering his wife in Guwahati. The arrest took place after the body that was packed in a sack was recovered from a drain on August 2.
The accused has been identified as Altaf Ali, who was the second husband of the deceased Mufida Begum, 25. Both were daily wage earners.
Chandmari assistant commissioner of police Kongkon Kumar Nath said the body of the woman was first spotted by some ragpickers in a drain in the Bamunimaidan area of the city on August 2. “On being informed, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination,” he added.
The officer added that according to the neighbours, Mufida was living with Ali and two minor children in a rented accommodation in Bhaskarnagar area and had gone missing from July 31. After the body was recovered on August 2, Ali was on the run.
Additional deputy commissioner of police, Guwahati central police district, Pallav Tamuli said, “It is suspected that Ali killed Mufida and fled. The body does not have any injury marks and the exact cause of her death could not be ascertained yet.”
