Greggs to axe bakery staple from stores this Easter as vegan favourite returns

Let's be honest, who among us doesn't love a Greggs?

Whether you're partial to a Chicken Bake, love the meat-free bliss of a Vegan Sausage Roll, or like indulging in something sweet after work, there's something at the popular bakery chain for everyone to enjoy.

That is, unless you're hoping to get your hands on a freshly baked hot cross bun this Easter.

Yes, you read that correctly, the bakery staple that has become a key feature of the Easter period will not be coming back to Greggs stores in 2022 - meaning you'll have to stick to your favourite supermarket varieties instead.

The bakery hasn't unveiled its full menu for the year ahead, but with Easter set to fall on April 17 and the Christian period of Lent already underway, they have confirmed to The Sun that there definitely won't be any hot cross buns in the oven any time soon.

A spokesperson said: "Our Hot Cross Buns are taking a well-deserved rest from our Easter menu this year but keep an eye out for our other exciting Easter products which will be in shops soon."

While the news might sound devastating for the toasted fruit bread lovers among us, it's not all doom and gloom on the Greggs front, as the chain has also announced the return of a fan-favourite item.

Forget Vegan Sausage Rolls - the Vegan Sausage, Bean & CheeZe Melt is now back in shops nationwide.

First launched in August 2021, the melt - which mirrors the Sausage, Bean and Cheese Melt - was removed at the end of the year to make way for the Greggs festive bake, much to the annoyance of many.

The vegan-friendly pastry treat - which is priced at £1.65, though prices may vary between stores - includes pieces of vegan sausage, grated mozzarella flavour vegan cheeZe, and lashings of piping hot baked beans.

Meanwhile, Greggs also recently made the controversial and slightly bizarre move into clothing, as it paired with Primark to launch a sell-out range of underpants, socks, t-shirts, bucket hats, and more.

We sent Courtney Pochin to visit the pop-up boutique experience in London's Dean Street last month, and she described the range as "pure comfort for carb-lovers".

Courtney said: "The only downside of the whole thing in my book was that the collection doesn't feature any homeware - which is such a big part of the Primark shopping experience.

Seems the two companies might have missed a trick by not creating candles that smell like Greggs baked goods and cushions shaped liked pink sprinkle doughnuts - I know I'd have taken them home in a heartbeat."
