Greggs to 'consider' St James' Park opening after bold request from Newcastle United fan

A Newcastle United fan has approached Greggs with demands for a new branch at St James' Park.

The Tyneside bakers have shops dotted around the city centre, including ones in Northumberland Street, Grainger Street and a stone's throw away from St James' at Global Radio's HQ, but one supporter, clearly keen for a sausage roll or steak bake on match days, got in touch with them to request one at the ground itself.

The fan, Lee Robson, contacted Greggs ' official Twitter account to ask: "When are we getting a @GreggsOfficial inside St James’ Park though?"

His tweet was favourited 150 times by other fans and, then on Friday morning, Lee got a direct response from Greggs, who told him: "Hi Lee, It's great to hear you'd love us to open a shop in St.James' Park. We're always keen to hear where our customers want us to be.

"We’ve passed your request onto our Property Team for their consideration at their next review."

Their response, as well as getting a reaction from Lee himself, sparked a flurry of responses from others clearly keen on the idea.

One replied: "If this becomes reality can i still use me discount card ha?. I promise i won't buy the whole Gallowgate end bait at half price," with another posting: "Imagine how well the ham & pease pudding stotties would go down after a few pints….bring them back!"

A third posted: "They should have people walking up and down the stands selling sausage rolls"

Others were quick to applaud Lee for his bold request, with one suggesting: "Knighthood inbound if this comes off for you Lee," and another mentioning fan group Wor Flags to write: "we need a Lee flag and a Greggs flag if they pull this off"

It's been a busy week for Greggs. As well as responding to Lee's genius request, they've launched their own clothing line in collaboration with Primark.

The garments, including Greggs sliders, boxer shorts and hoodies, will go on sale in both the Newcastle and Metrocentre Primark stores on Saturday morning.
