Great North Run Red Arrows flypast cancelled as huge changes made following Queen's death

The iconic Red Arrows flypast, which marks the start of the annual Great North Run, will not form a part of this year's event.

Great North Run organisers announced that Red Arrows flypast and display has been cancelled this year as the UK mourns the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The late Queen, who was Britain's longest-reigning monarch, passed away at Balmoral Castle on Thursday.

Following her death, the UK has entered an official mourning period. National guidance states there is "no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures" during this time, leaving the decision up to individual organisations as to whether to go ahead.

And while the Great North Run will go ahead during the official mourning period, organisers have adapted the event to ensure the it is carried out respectfully.

Among the adaptation is the cancellation of the Red Arrows flypast and display. Organisers added that all RAF display flying has been cancelled during the official mourning period.

The Great North Run start line music will also reflect the mood of the nation, setting the tone for what will be a poignant moment of remembrance for Queen Elizabeth II, organisers have said.

People are also be encouraged to be mindful of the very sad and special circumstances in which the event will be taking place.
