Regarding the ongoing discussion around how to reduce injuries in the NBA, Grant Hill says he believes injuries have less to do with the length of the season and more to do with teams and players adopting an “overly cautious” mentality.
“If you take a look at today’s environment, it’s very much rest, recover …” Hill told USA TODAY’s Mackenzie Salmon. “There’s not this pressure to play every [regular season] game.”
While Hill acknowledged the focus on player health has advanced for the better over the years, he says the current culture of the league regarding injuries could be an overcorrection.
“The pendulum has swung so far the other way that one could say we are overly cautious,” Hill said. ” … I think an NBA season was meant to be hard. They don’t practice as hard, they don’t do back-to-backs, and so sometimes I wonder if they are in proper condition to survive the marathon of a season that exists throughout 82 games.”
