Gran fights for life in Turkey after catching Covid on holiday

A well-loved grandmother is fighting for her life after catching Covid on holiday in Turkey.

Pat House was having an ‘amazing time’ whilst on her sunny break at Marmaris when she started to feel ill the night before flying home.

Pat was left gasping for breath before she was admitted into hospital.

Two days later, the mum-of-two was put in intensive care and has been placed on a ventilator in Turkey. Her two daughters have now flown out to Turkey to be with her.

Having been admitted to hospital days after she should have flown home - the family now fear Pat may not be covered by her travel insurance .

Over the past few days, the family have raised £200 to help support Pat's loved ones with costs to support the adored grandmother.

Pat began to feel unwell on Friday - that day she picked up some antibiotics from the pharmacy and tucked herself in for an early night.

Pat’s friend, Desrey Dones, 73, had booked the holiday for the pair. She checked on her the following morning to find the mum-of-two gasping for breath.

The hotel which Pat was staying in called an ambulance for her. She was then taken to the nearby private hospital but no one was allowed in with her.

They were told she was receiving oxygen and to keep checking back on her but hours later they found her sitting in the waiting area.

Pat had tested positive for Covid and had bronchitis but the hospital had no beds for coronavirus patients, Desrey was told.

Desrey was able to borrow a wheelchair and take Pat back to the hotel where initially, she seemed to be improving.

Pat insisted that Desrey should fly home on their scheduled flight while Desrey's family members, who were also staying in the same hotel, stayed to check on Pat.

Pat was able to get a hold of a nebuliser and it seemed her condition was improving but she rapidly declined, and was taken to the state hospital an hour away in Muğla.

Pat's daughter's Keeley and Jasmine have now flown out to Turkey- but only Jasmine has been able to see her. At the moment there is no change in her condition.

Desrey's daughter April Pearson has set up a Go Fund Me page in the hope of supporting the family during this difficult time.

She said: "It's really sad, it's also the financial pressures of everything. Pat's two daughters have flown out there. I know they were at first paying £45 to get from Marmaris to Muğla each way.

"They've found another hotel closer to the hospital but it must be so hard for them."

Pat is known to remain in the ICU where her daughter Keeley has contacted her insurance company but at this time it's not clear if her hospital treatment will be covered due to underlying health conditions.

April added: "I saw Pat on FaceTime with my mum on Friday and she didn't look really unwell the night before she said she just felt a bit chesty. It came on so quick,"

"Mum and Pat live a few doors away from one another and met taking their dogs out for walks. She's a really lovely, kind lady.

"She's originally from down south and moved up to Middlesbrough to be closer to one of her daughters. She's a quiet lady but so lovely.

April added: "My mum said they were having such a laugh on holiday, it was so different to walking the dogs on going to the shops and it's taken such a turn."
