James suffered the issue in an innocuous challenge with Theo Hernandez and initially looked to continue before quickly being replaced by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Potter said: "He's due to see a specialist at the weekend so until we get that information there's not too much I can add unfortunately. The rest would just be speculation from my perspective so we'll wait and see."

The Blues' head coach also confirmed that N'Golo Kante's setback has seen the midfielder required to meet with a consultant. The Frenchman had slowly been reintegrated into first team training but Kante suffered a reaction in one session and was not present in Blues' training ahead of AC Milan. Potter added that Wesley Fofana was unlikely to be available ahead of the World Cup.

Potter said: "Again, he's due to see a consultant at the weekend. It's a setback so it's not good news but anything other than that at this stage I can't give you anything more. He's [Fofana] just progressing, I don't think we'll see him before the World Cup."
