Gordon Brown has admitted he was left "embarrassed" after private meetings with the Queen as she often knew more than he did about current affairs.
The Labour grandee, who was Prime Minister between 2007 and 2010, said the monarch "actually knew better about what was happening to the country" than he did during his time in No10.
Mr Brown, who was among the 15 PMs who served during the Queen's 70-year reign, said she never gave him advice during their weekly meetings but showed a keen interest in the events of the day.
