Good Morning Britain viewers baffled by Grant Shapps' 'choice' for next Prime Minister

Good Morning Britain viewers were baffled as Grant Shapps' explained his choice for the next Prime Minister.

The race for the next leader of the Conservative Party is now underway after Boris Johnson confirmed he would be stepping down. Mr Shapps launched a bid over the weekend to replace the outgoing Prime Minister.

However, the Transport Secretary backed out of the race yesterday as he endorsed Rishi Sunak's campaign. The former Chancellor is one of eight MPs who have made it through to the first round of voting.

Mr Shapps appeared on today's edition of Good Morning Britain to share his reasons for backing Mr Sunak. He said: "It’s still two & half years till the next election, I think we need a serious Prime Minister who can step right into the roll and I think that's Rishi Sunak."

However, fans following the show on Twitter were in hysterics as Mr Shapps stumbled over his words as he endorsed Mr Sunak.

Jacinta said: "Did he just call him “Richy Sunshine”?"

David added: "'I think that’s Rishi Shanshine.' Who? Who’s that? That’s not another one of his aliases is it?"

Rick posted : "Who's "Rishi Synak", Grant Shapps?"
