Bristol City’s home shirt for 2022/23 may not have been accompanied by a contract renewal or a certain right wing-back, but the big reveal certainly caused some degree of stir within the fanbase.
With a 1950s-inspired throwback shirt, City continued the theme of having a narrative with their kits designed by Hummel.
In 2020/21, it was the tribute to the Ashton Gate Eight, the purple and lime nod to Brian Tinnion and the third kit bearing the names of supporters. While last season saw the black away kit with a design across the front based on the houses of Totterdown.
For the forthcoming campaign, City will wear a shirt with white sleeves and hooped socks referencing the 1954/55 squad which achieved promotion from Division Three South under Pat Beasley, with John Atyeo leading the attack.
It’s a bold look and a considerable departure from the all red Robins fans have grown accustomed to down the decades. Also of significance is the presence of a collar for the first time since 2014/15 - City’s double-winning season under Steve Cotterill in League One.
New shirts always create debate and disagreement and very few designs are met with universal approval. Tuesday’s unveiling stayed true to form with fans on our Twitter and Facebook pages enthused by the retro feel but others bemused by the similarities to Arsenal, Rotherham United or Fleetwood Town (depending on your preference).
Joby Magwa: "Good enough for Ateyo and the boys, good enough for me."
Scott Maker: "I like it. Very retro. It’s the same every season, some will love it, some will moan. If you like it buy it. If you don’t then don’t."
Mary Matthews: "Very Arsenal. Quite like it."
Neil Sutton: "Real marmite kit. But fair play to Rotherham for sharing it with us."
Richard Morgan: "The kid who designed it forgot to colour on the sleeves."
Jamie Barlow: "50s kit ..... I'd leave it there personally."
Jordan Cox: "Retro top. Proper."
Kirk Jarrett: "Remember the players are only smiling about it because they are being paid to."
Anthony Nicholls: "Even the players are trying to hide those dreadful collar’s / gap in between."
