Richard Madeley has revealed the brutal comment his mother in law had said to him when he moved in with wife Judy Finnigan.
The Good Morning Britain presenter sat alongside Ranvir Singh on the ITV show today as they spoke with Jack Whitehall's parents Michael and Hilary about the new series of their podcast. As Michael and Hilary discussed her own parents' reaction to her deciding to marry Michael, who is two decades her senior, Richard shared what Judy's mum had said to him when they reached a big milestone.
Richard recalled how thrilled he was to be moving in with Judy, but a visit from his mother in law didn't go to plan.
As Hilary explained that her mother had said she was "reserving judgement" about Michael when she first met him, Richard explained his own experience, sharing: "Sounds a bit like my former mother in law actually! She came around when Judy and I moved in together and I always remember her coming in and looking at me and then looked at Judy."
He added: "She said to Judy, what's going on?" leaving everyone in hysterics as Richard shared the awkward encounter.
Richard first met Judy when he joined Granada to present alongside Tony Wilson and Judy.
"I remember the first time I saw him. He walked into the newsroom and I was sitting at my desk at the other end. I remember exactly what he was wearing: a pale blue linen suit. I thought he looked nice. Tall, handsome and all that but I thought the suit was a bit flash. Then, because he was a newbie, I was assigned the job of looking after him," she told The Mirror.
Richard recalled how Judy, being more experienced as a journalist than him, had a funny way of introducing herself.
Speaking of coming face to face with his crush, he shared: "I was sitting at my desk when this hand appeared on my shoulder and I looked up at this face and Judy said, 'Hi, I'm your Mummy' and I thought 'Whaaaaat?' At Granada when someone new arrived, someone was appointed as their dad or their mum to show them round – the canteen, the toilets and all that. So Judy was my 'mum.'"
The pair have now been married for over three decades and share Chloe, 35, and Jack, 36, together.
