Gloria Estefan Opens Up About Childhood Sexual Abuse Trauma

Senate Judiciary hearing on the FBI handling of the Larry Nassar investigation of sexual abuse of Olympic gymnasts, in Washington

Gloria Estefan recently shared more details about her experience of being sexually abused by a family member at the age of 9. In an interview for the Life Stories documentary series The Thread, the eight-time Grammy-winning singer discussed the incident, which she had previously spoken about to support other survivors.

Reflecting on the abuse, Estefan described her abuser as 'a predator of the worst kind.' She explained that she had started spending time with him to study music, as her parents thought it would be beneficial for her musical education. It took her a year to gather the courage to confide in her mother about the abuse.

Estefan revealed that fear had initially prevented her from speaking out, as she was concerned about the abuser's escalating behavior. The stress caused by the situation led to physical symptoms, such as hair loss, and avoidance of music classes.

During the conversation, Estefan emphasized the importance of equipping children with tools to prevent such incidents. She suggested that parents openly communicate with their children and assure them that they can share anything that happens to them. She also stressed the need to hold predators accountable by ensuring they face legal consequences.

In a previous episode of Red Table Talk: The Estefans, Estefan had disclosed her past trauma with the support of her niece and daughter. She highlighted how the abuser had exploited his position of power and gradually manipulated the situation.

Estefan cautioned that abuse often starts subtly and escalates quickly, underscoring the importance of early intervention and prevention.
